Hot Runner

Hot runner is a type of feeding system of molds: two plates are heated along with a manifold system. This system directs the molten plastic to special nozzles, which lead to cavity parts.

Compared to hot runner, the other system is called cold runner.

Note: there is another way to sort out hot runner system: HOT TIP and SPRUE GATING.

Pros and cons of hot runner system

Pros:

  • Save materials, as there are no runners, so as plastic waste. Perfect for high cost materials such as LCP, PEEK.
  • Competitive unit part price.
  • Ideal for large size of parts, like automotive components.
  • Ideal for multi-cavity molds, such as razor handles, plastic caps for bottles or sprayers.
  • Cons:

  • Higher mold cost compared to cold runners, so does the maintenance cost.
  • High requirement on mold design, especially in filling balance
  • Not easy to change colors
  • May not suitable for all resins, especially for those are heat sensitive
