Gate

Gate is also known as gate location or filling gate. It refers to the portion of the mold where resin enters the mold cavity.
It plays a role of the link between the part and the runner system.

Gates in injection molded parts

Below pictures are to show you where you can see the gates in molded components.

The “white marks”showed on the above photos are called Gate Vestage, which were left by the cold runners. They are usually trimmed manually or cut off automatically by injection machines.

Types of Gates

There are 4 common types of gates for mold design:

Edge gate- gate type- injection molding

Design Guide for Injection Molding

  • Consider the gate for cosmetic parts and functionality like assembly.
  • Gate locations or multi gates will cause weld lines.
  • Consider how to “hide” the gate marks if they can not be removed. One of the solutions is to put a lable.
  • Gates in DFM Report

    At Plastopia, we provide a DFM report to suggest where the gates should be. You don’t have to analyze the gates yourself, but need to confirm them before tooling. Here are 2 examples:

  • The suggested gates in the report may not be your only option, if the locations are not good at cosmetically or functionally.
  • You will have to confirm the gate marks before tooling, especially when they may effect assembly.
  • An assembly drawing with your part will be helpful for us to choose the right gate location. Why?.
