VDI Surface Finish refers to the surface finish standard set by Verein Deutscher Ingenieure (VDI), the Society of German Engineers. The VDI 3400 surface finish is mainly processed by Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) when mold machining. It could also be done by the traditional texturing method.

The complete VDI 3400 texture covers 45 values, but the most common use 12 values are (refer to pictures on the left):

  • VDI 12, VDI 15, VDI 18, VDI 21, VDI 24, VDI 27.
  • VDI 30, VDI 33, VDI 36, VDI 39, VDI 42, VD I45.

Although the society of German Engineers set the VDI 3400 texture standard, it is nowadays widely used worldwide among tool makers, including North America, Europe, and Asia.
